BHT or butylhydroxytoluene is classified by Health Canada as a substance used to preserve food by retarding deterioration, rancidity, or discoloration due to oxidation. It has undergone extensive regulation by Health Canada and has been labeled safe for consumer consumption. That is why BHT is commonly included in packaging to help maintain freshness of the product.
As mentioned above, BHT is an antioxidant, preventing oxidation damage to food. When food is exposed to air it oxidizes. This means it combines with the oxygen in the air. Oxidization makes food go rancid. When foods are not treated with BHT, they can spoil very quickly, causing a bad taste, and potentially creating health risks for consumers. By using preservatives like BHT, foods are shelf-stable longer, and their flavors are retained.
